Red-throated loon (Gavia stellata)

You can see the red-throated loon at Pihtilampi.

The red-throated loon is a rare breeding bird in Finland. It is a long-lived species that produces few young.

The bird only breeds in certain types of ponds and small lakes, usually with few fish, and with moss beds or a mossy edge that can be very narrow. It eats fish that the mother birds bring to their young from very far away from large lakes.

The red-throated loon is susceptible to disturbance and many mothers leave the nest when there are people on the shore of the breeding pond. This can lead to nest failure.

How to get there

From road number 322 (Luopioinen-Rautajärvi), turn onto Pihtilammentie. The Pihtilammentie intersection is on the left when coming from Pälkäne, slightly after the center of Luopioinen.

When coming from Kuhmalahti and Rautajärvi, the intersection is on the right some distance after the center of Rautajärvi.

Pihtilammentie is very narrow in places, which is why there are swerving areas along the road for passing. Drive along Pihtilammentie for about 3.5 kilometers until a road branches off to the left towards the pond. This road leads to a parking area.

Laipanmaa Hiking Area
A hidden gem of Pirkanmaa

Pihtilampi has parking space for those starting on the trails.

Pihtilampi is one of the starting points for the Laipanmaa trails. It serves either as a starting point for the Hirvijärvi tour or, if the starting point is the Rajala cabin, Pihtilampi with its lean-to is conveniently almost halfway along the tour.
